Two extremes in one day. Low: Salem, Massachusetts. High: Maine.
On our way out of Boston, we decided to stop in Salem, Mass, you know, to see the witch hunt hype. Getting into Salem, Massachusetts is a nightmare. There's like one road and I think it' s a single-lane highway and it takes forever and it's the worst.
We did have some delicious pizza on our way in, though. I want that right now.
Once you get into Salem, you have to pay to park. Everywhere. Boo. We didn't have long there, so we decided to get the full effect and participated in a live reenactment of one of the trials. The actors were a bit over the top but it was pretty entertaining and the history there is very interesting.
From there, we headed up the coast into Maine, and that's when things got good. Maine is GORGEOUS.
I just couldn't get over it. I felt like I had to literally suck the memory into my eyeballs so I'd never forget it. Thank goodness for cameras.
Jaime snapped this of a family on our way out of the park. Cool, huh? She really wanted to approach them and offer to send them the picture because she liked it so much.
When in Maine, eat lobster, right? Well we did. Neither of us had ever really had lobster before, so we wanted to get the true Maine lobster experience. We headed into downtown Portland, and found a parking spot right in front of our restaurant and just as I was going to feed the meter, someone told me parking was free after 5 PM. Maine: 1. Salem: 0.
We started with clam chowder, which was delightful, then started our adventure with our friend Larry the Lobster. Our server had to educate us as to how to even go about eating Larry because we were so clueless.
The verdict? I don't understand the hype. Sure, it was good, but not any better than shrimp or fish, in my opinion, and shrimp is a whole lot cheaper. And when you eat a whole lobster, you don't even get to eat about half of him. Not much meat for a whole lot of dollars. We had almost half of Larry's body left over afterwards.
That night, we stayed in a cottage that we'd found on airBnB.com. The owner's name was Deb, and she was super nice and helpful and we loved having this cute little place all to ourselves.
Jaime was so excited because there was even a combination omelet and waffle maker and Deb had provided eggs and waffle mix and cheese and fruit and all kinds of stuff for breakfast. She was awesome.
