Jaime and I went to church with her family then headed out on the road. Our end goal that first day was Mt. Rushmore, in South Dakota - about a ten-hour drive. We packed some food and headed out. It was definitely our longest driving day, but surprisingly didn't seem too bad.
We passed the Church history site at Martin's Cove and Devil's Gate, so we stopped for a minute. I'd been there before and Jaime had actually been there just the day before on a trek with her stake, but it was a good Sunday afternoon stop. I'm so inspired by the dedication and faith of the Mormon pioneers. They went through so much hardship but stayed true to what they knew they needed to do and trusted that God would provide a way.
After a lot of this in Wyoming...
we made it to Hot Springs, South Dakota, where we stayed in this adorable little log cabin.
In the morning, we explored Hot Springs for a minute - the buildings are exactly what you'd expect of a frontier, western town, but then it has this super green stretch of creek and waterfall down the middle of the town.
We drove up through some beautiful scenery in South Dakota before reaching Mt. Rushmore. We briefly considered visiting the Crazy Horse memorial before we realized it was like $20, so we settled for this distant photo. You can see his profile up on the cliff.
I love Mt. Rushmore!
