My new job has the best breaks: two weeks for fall break, one week for Thanksgiving, two weeks for winter, and two weeks for spring break. I have come to believe that it is physically impossible for me to stay at home when I have more than a week off work, so I boarded a plane and flew to Utah to visit my friends!
The first day I was there, Jaime took the day off and we drove out to the salt flats. She really is the best friend in the world, because I know I can count on her to be up for any adventure I suggest, even if it seems like a waste of gas. The salt flats were not a waste of gas, though. They were gorgeous!
The flats were partially covered with water when we were there, but it did make for some pretty stunning reflections!
We have the best world.
Jaime made us some fab chicken salad flatbread sandwiches and packed them in her adorable little picnic bag and we ate our lunch with a beautiful view. Also taking the view while eating lunch - an older couple, both in khaki pants and button-up shirts. Is it a rule that you can't wear jeans after you turn 70?
While we were out there, we saw what Wendover, the closest town, had to offer other than gambling. It wasn't much, but it was worth visiting once! There's a historic airfield there, which is where the bomber squads that dropped the atomic bomb in World War II trained. There's a small museum there with artifacts and pictures.
And a replica bomb!
This old plane was tourable, so we sure did.
Utah Nevada state line, next to a casino with astroturf. Keepin' it classy.
Wendover boasts the final pole of the first transcontinental telephone line, completed in 1914.
We also planned to visit Jukebox Cave and Danger Cave, but what we didn't realize was that it is only accessible by a very sketchy dirt road, so we didn't pursue it. But remember that best friend who's up for anything? She was ready to take her little Hyundai Elantra out to whatever middle-of-nowhere cave I find on the internet. She's the best.
